Richie Sebastian is a Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) for the Garden Grove Unified School District. With over 15 years of experience as a credentialed music educator, Richie has served as the Director of Instrumental Music at Los Alamitos High School (2009-2012) and La Quinta High School (2012-2023). His extensive background in education and performance has shaped his approach to teaching and design, allowing him to bring a wealth of experience to his work with students and ensembles.
Richie’s academic journey began at Pasadena City College, where he studied Music Education and Computer Science, earning his A.A. and A.S. He went on to California State University, Northridge, where he completed his Bachelor’s of Arts in Music Education and his Single Subject Teaching Credential. Studying under Doug Tornquist, Richie honed his skills as a tuba player and gained performance experience with prestigious groups such as the Pasadena City College Tournament of Roses Honor Band, even serving as the Drum Major for the 2001 Rose Parade.
An active member of the Southern California marching arts community for over 20 years, Richie has worked with a variety of groups at all levels, from A through World Class, including high school, community college, and independent ensembles. His diverse roles in the marching arts include instructor, caption head (brass, visual, Drum Major, Front Ensemble), designer (brass, visual/drill, and front ensemble), consultant, program coordinator, and director (Pulse Percussion: 2012-2015). These experiences have given him a deep understanding of both the creative and logistical aspects of ensemble performance and design.
As a visual and drill designer for Marching Bands, Indoor Percussion, Winter Guards, and Indoor Winds groups, Richie has developed a strong emphasis on collaboration. He believes that success is rooted in relationships—what you create together with others. Richie brings this philosophy to life through a collaborative process that prioritizes teamwork, professionalism, and an open exchange of ideas. This approach ensures that the design process is both inclusive and effective, with all voices being heard and respected.
With his experience as a former Director of Instrumental Music, Richie brings a unique perspective to his work. His designs are carefully crafted to be appropriate, achievable, and engaging, always ensuring the placement of performers enhances the overall visual impact. His designs are modern, exciting, and fully coordinated, drawing from his broad experience to create engaging and dynamic visual packages that meet the needs of the performers.
Richie currently resides in Westminster, CA, where he continues to inspire and mentor the next generation of musicians and designers.
